Barnard Castle is a market town and is considered the main town in Teesdale. It is located to the north of the Yorkshire Dales and is approximately 40 minutes from Durham and less than 90 minutes from York.

The town has very interesting architecture including the ruins of the ancient castle. It is also home to the magnificent Bowes museum housed in a century old French chateau right beside Barnard Castle School.
